Chris Rock's great-great-grandfather

Julius Caesar Tingman (or Tinghman), served in the U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War. Within just a few months, Dr. Gates says, Julius was promoted to the rank of corporal. He died in 1917, Julius had gone from being a slave to a land owner.

    seeing this on OETA/PBS made me want to know more about my native american people. To the actor Cheadle, I'm sorry my people owned slaves, although I'm Cherokee, not Chickasaw. You made Mr. Rock cry. And me also! Good JOB!

    Thank you Thank you Thank you. I'm learning more about my native american people from whom I decended. I can't thank you enough for sparking my interest again. I am a registered Cherokee Indian, and VERY PROUD TO BE NATIVE AMERICAN!
