Letter urging gradual emancipation instead of secession
H. Abram, of Richmond, Virginia, wrote Gov. William H. Gist of South Carolina, November 29, 1860, urging gradual emancipation and then resettlement of slaves as opposed to secession, comparing the South's possible fate to that of ancient Egypt.
