AFRICAN AMERICAN LETTERS-A DYING MAN'S WORDS TO HIS WIFE
James Jeffords penned this letter to his wife Patience in 1773 prior to his death. Patience submitted the letter to prove her marriage to Jeffords, while applying for benefits based on her marriage to John Lines, her second husband.
