Desertion among the guards at Camp Ford, near Tyler, Texas

In July, 1864, almost 100 of the guards at Camp Ford, the largest POW camp west of the Mississippi, deserted en masse. Here Col. Scott Anderson relates the reasons some of the returned men gave for their desertion, plus his own opinions.
