A Fort Bliss soldier asks his father for advice, January 1861

A Mississippi soldier, stationed with the U.S. Army at Fort Bliss, has just heard that his native state has seceded. He doesn't know whether to resign or not, leaving the post to the "enemy" and the town to the mercy of Indians and Mexican bandits.
