Samuel Evans might have a middle name that begins with an S. Very little information on him!!! Born between 1796-1800 in Virginia according to his age in the 1840-1870 census records. He married Mary (maiden name unknown). They had 6 children that I am aware of. They were all born in Wythe County, Virginia although there are no birth records. He is shown in the tax records for Wythe County all the years his children were born--so I ASSUME they were born there. 1. Sarah E. EVANS born abt 1833 and I think she married James Jasper ANDERS, 25 April 1855 in Ashe County, North Carolina. 2. John J. EVANS, born abt 1835. He married Elizabeth ARNEY, 25 September 1854 in Smyth County, Virginia. They had one child, born 29 July 1860 at Cripple Creek, Wythe, Virginia. The baby died 1 Aug 1860. There was no mention of the sex of the baby. The information was found in the death records for Wythe County, Virginia. He died 15 May 1864 during a Civil War battle at Drewry's Bluff, Chesterfield, Virginia. Elizabeth never remarried. This record is connected with John and Elizabeth's 1860 census record in Wythe County, Virginia. 3. Joseph Daniel EVANS, born 16 December 1854. He is listed in the family above (#678) in the 1860 census. He has a footnote page with more information on him. 4. Eliza A. EVANS, born abt 1839. I think she married Alfred BEDWELL , 16 February 1855 in Ashe County, North Carolina and they were divorced 1869 in Grayson County, Virginia. 5. David Henry EVANS, born 20 May 1840. There is a footnote page for him that will tell more information. He is my great grandfather. 6. Amanda EVANS, born abt 1843. I think she married John H. SEXTON, 7 Dec 1856 in Ashe County, North Carolina. Samuel and Mary show up in the 1840 census in Wythe County, Virginia; the 1850 census in Smyth County, Virginia; the 1860 census in Grayson County, Virginia and the 1870 census in Alleghany County, North Carolina. Full name David Henry EVANS. HIs name in the 1860 census looks like Daniel or a very loosely written David. I am not sure why they would put Daniel except his older brother, Daniel, is listed above. David was born 20 May 1840. Since his father was listed on the tax rolls that year for Wythe County, Virginia, I ASSUME he was born there. He married Susan POOLE (POOL), 24 February 1864 in Alleghany County, North Carolina. They had one son, John Henry EVANS, born and died 1863. He died 20 September 1864 near Bruce Town, Frederick, Virginia. Susan never remarried after his death but she did have a son, James Eddie Alexander EVANS, born 18 December 1872 by William DICKEY. She was living as a domestic in the DICKEY house in the 1870 census. My grandfather, James Eddie Alexander EVANS, always knew who his birth father was. ...more

Full name is William Steven. I am not sure where the J. came from that is on the 1860 census. He was born 25 September 1859 to Joseph Daniel EVANS and Ursula (maiden name WELCH) in Beaverdam, Grayson County, Virginia. He was a twin and the other baby boy died at birth. Most places he is listed as Steven. He married Elizabeth BEDWELL 28 February 1880 in Grayson, Virginia. They lived their entire lives in Grayson County, Virginia. They had about 7 children and I am researching them because I have founf so many differences. After Elizabeth died in 1909 he married Vina Parks. Full name is Joseph Daniel EVANS. He was born 16 December 1836 in Wythe County, Virginia to Samuel and Mary (unknown maiden name) EVANS. He married Ursula WELCH 13 October 1857 in Ashe County, North Carolina. They had 4 children--Layer EVANS (female), born 7 October 1858 and died 15 November 1859 William Steven EVANS (male) & twin (male), born 25 September 1859. Unnames twin died at birth. John D. The census has her listed as Mary. Her real name is Ursula (maiden name WELCH). I am not sure why they list Mary but her mother-in-law who was living next door was Mary. Ursula was born abt 1836 to Daniel WELCH and unknown mother. Marriage and children information under husband--Daniel EVANS. After Daniel died she married Alfred BEDWELL, 26 March 1871. She died 19 September 1885 in Elk Creek, Grayson, Virginia. ...more
