Jesse enlisted in the Maryland 5th Regiment, Infantry, A Company on September 24, 1861, about a week after brother John. He reached the rank of Segarent and was discharged on September 1, 1865. Jesse is mentioned in a letter contained within John's pension claim file. "Jesse and I are well".

According to son John's Civil War pension records (Widow's claims submitted by his mother), the father is named Samuel A. West. This should read S.A. West, not L.A. West. Correction request submitted November 3, 2012.

John West served during the Civil War as a private in the 5th Maryland Regiment, Infantry, A Company. He enlisted on September 12, 1861, was wounded at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862, and doed of his wounds on October 17, 1862. Based on a letter in his file, it appears that brother Jesse was also enlisted in the same Company. John's mother, Martha, claimed his pension. His ...more
