Private John F. Smith actually belonged to Company A, 21st Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was one of 15 privates that joined Company I, 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery, without being released from their regiment. He died of Typhoid Fever at the Indianapolis General Hospital on Feb. 20, 1864. He was buried in Section 10, Site 371, Crown Hill National Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN.
