My great uncle Coy "Wiley" Goff was lost during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a Seaman 2nd Class, was 24 years old and have served about (9) months at that time. He was awarded shore leave and swapped with a fellow shipmate (one of 40 on shore)

Coy was not even supposed to be on duty this faithful day, but traded with a shipmate so he could instead have shore leave - and in essence saved his life.
