Reacting swiftly, Captain Dopko took a fire extinguisher and boarded the blazing vehicle, completely disregarding his own safety, but at the same time warning another man [Sgt. John M. Twardowski] to stay away from the hazardous area. He steadfastly maintained his position, exchanging the extinguisher for a water hose as soon as fire truck equipment could be employed and assisted in fighting the blaze until the fire was out and the ammunition cooled to a degree where explosion was less likely. His unhesitating action in the face of extreme danger helped prevent a serious situation which, except for the swift measures that were taken, undoubtedly would have resulted in extensive loss of life and equipment. By his extraordinary heroism, brilliant initiative and unfaltering dedication to duty throughout, Captain Dopko upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. According to US Court of Declarations of Intent (in Scranton) from 1906, Peter was born in Russia, but it may be that he was of Polish ethnicity. He immigrated to the U.S. on February 18, 1900, along with his mother, Fransiska, and brother, Seskla or Charles, aboard the S.S. Phoenicia. His father immigrated in 1896, apparently in an effort to raise money to bring the rest of the family across. Entry point to the U.S. was Ellis Island. Fransiska was listed as formerly residing at Przerosl; ethnicity: Russian; Port of Departure: Hamburg; age: 24. This is Jonathan "Hower," not "Honer." Born 11/18/1794, a son of Anthony and Mary Kershner Hower/Houer. The wife listed in this census (Elizabeth Margaret Moore Hower), is his second wife. His first wife was Lydia Castle (1800-1840). In 1825 Jonathan Hower was placed in indenture to serve as spring keeper to purchase Plot #38 in Clear Spring, Md. The property measuring 66' breadth and 198' length. Four years later he was made one of the trustees of the German Reformed Congregation of St. Peter's Church in Clear Spring. Jonathan Hower died 4/24/1865 and was buried in the St. Peter's cemetery. ...more
