How ridiculous it was for uneducated Choctaw citizens to have to go up against the Federal Government establishment whose purpose, it seems, was actually to deny applicants rather than research the record to prove they were, indeed, Native American. Today, we know that John T. Williams was the Grandson of Choctaw Chief Nitticachee who signed the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit. His son Ambrose Williams, who gave his life in the Civil War serving on the side of the U. S. Govt. (north), was 1/2 Choctaw and John T. Williams was 1/4 Choctaw as he stated in his testimony and various other letters to the Government Commissioners. John T. also provided the name of his Uncle who was already enrolled. John T. Williams should never have been denied. What a travesty - being denied your cultural rights and eliminated as a member of your rightful society. Shame on the Federal Government. ...more
