Gerrit Hendrik Vennink was born 08 apr 1819 in Groenlo, Gelderland province, Netherlands, and died 04 Mar 1912 in Oxnard, Ventury County, CA. In 1832, he enlisted in the militia in Netherlands, and in 1844, he immigrated to the U.S. On 23 Dec 1849, he married Wilhelmina Boon in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, MI in the governor's mansion, where they both worked. He was mustered-in at Davenport, IA on 28 Sep, 1861, and served during the Civil War in Company I, Eleventh Regiment, Iowa Infantry volunteers. He was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh.
