She was my grandmother and a very hard working women. She was a giver. She took a lot of pride in herself. She was the mother of four children and had a husband named Joseph, my grandfather. She loved talking business and was a business woman. She had several stores selling dry goods. She never had a license but new how to get where she needed to go. Either by bus or train, in the early days it was trolley cars. She was tough in a good way. She made sure no one took advantage of her. She was smart and had a great sense of humor. When family visited, there was ALWAYS something on the table to eat. The garden she planted year after year was immense and wonderful. I would love to go exploring to see what was growing. Fruit and veggies were plentiful. I remember when she would pick her red juicy tomotoes, cut them up and place the slices on fresh Italian bread, large oval pieces. Then she would drizzle olive oil on it, a little salt....my oh my. What a wonderful flavor and so simple to make. The family would sit outside in the summer and drool over those "tomato sandwiches". What a treasured memory of my grandmother's hard work that brought so much pleasure to all. ...more
