William Keirn/Kern enlisted in Company D, 53rd Regiment of Indiana Infantry. He enlisted when he was 17 and lied about his age saying he was 18. was with them for the rest of the war and was even in the Grand Review in Washington D.C. he was mustered out of service in Louisville, Kentucky on July 20, 1865. He walked home to Clark County from there.

Enlisted in Company B, 16th Alabama Infantry Regiment he enlisted in August of 1861 in Lawrence County, Alabama. He died on April 30, 1863 of Typhoid Fever in Tunnle Hill, GA.
