This receipt is likely for John B. Lott, of Co. H, 7th South Carolina Volunteers. John was the younger brother of George W. Lott. George did not die at Winchester in 1863 - he lost a leg at Gettysburg but survived the war. His brother John, however, left camp sick just before Gettysburg, and was never heard from again. My theory is that John Lott somehow got to the hospital at Winchester, and may have been to ill to identify himself to the staff there. Alternatively, when he died, his remains may have been identified by equipment or uniform items that may have been initialed G. W. Lott, possible items give to John by his brother. On the day he died, 21 July 1863, Winchester was in the process of being evacuated as the Union army approached. John B. Lott probably is one of the many unknown rebels buried in the Stonewall Confederate Cemetery in Winchester, VA. ...more
