Early life

Edward Estlin Cummings was born on 14 October 1894 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Edward and Rebecca Haswell Clarke Cummings. He was named after his father, but was typically referred to by family members using his middle name. His father was a professor of sociology and political science at Harvard University and later became a Unitarian minister.
