SP4 BENJAMIN SCOLLEY WAS KILLED BY FRIENDLY FIRE Bravo company commander CPT George Dailey was killed on May 12, 1966 by friendly fire, when we were hit by American cluster bombs. I put Cpt. Dailey on chopper with a chest wound from those cluster bombs. A jet had dropped a load of CBU's while we were getting ready to sweep an area suspected to have VC in it. One pass from the jet and we had 7 friendly KIA's (SP4 Scolley was one of them) and a whole lot more wounded. When the company went on a sweep after bombing, there were only 13 of us left in 1st platoon. It was not the Air Force pilot's fault. General Depue had run out of white smoke to mark VC positions for the jet cover and used purple smoke - the same color we were using to mark our LZ. OBITUARY ~ CLINTON CO GI KILLED IN VIETNAM ~ Spec 4 Benjamin E. Scolley, 18, of Rt. 4, Sheridan, Indiana died May 12, 1966 of wounds suffered in Vietnam. A telegram from the Army's adjutant general came on Sunday to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter S. Scolley of Rt. 4. The wire said that 'Specialist 4th Class Scolley was wounded by bomb fragments while on a combat patrol'. The parents had received a wire earlier that their son was injured May 6. The nature of the wounds was not given. The youth enlisted in the Army on Jan 12, 1965, and was sent to Vietnam and with his tour starting on Sept 16, 1965. He was assigned to Bravo Co, 2nd Bn, 28th Inf Regmt, Black Lions, 1st Inf Div based at Lai Khe. He was a radio operator and was promoted to Spec 4 two weeks before he was injured. The parents had gotten a letter from him last Friday. It was dated a day after he was wounded, but the youth made no reference to his injury or hospitalization. The dead soldier was born in Clinton County and attended Sheridan High School. He was a construction worker before he enlisted. Surviving with the parents are a sister, Ida at home, and four brothers, Mark at home, and Thomas, Samuel and James of Sheridan. The body is expected here in a week or ten days. ~ FROM HIS VIETNAM BUDDIES ~ Mrs. Pete Scolley, Ben's mother, received a plaque from comrades of her son, SP4 Benjamin E. Scolley, who was killed on May 12, 1966. The inscription on the plaque said: ' In Memory of SP4 Benjamin E. Scolley, May 12, 1966 from his Comrades of 2nd Battalion 28th Infantry Regiment, Black Lions of Cantigny, 1st Infantry Division, Republic of Vietnam. May 3, 2010
