One of the largest slave holders in Lowndes County, Alabama

Lowndes County, AL

Between 1825-1839, Dr. Marrast received at least four land grants in AL at Hale, Perry and Tuscaloosa counties. At Lowndes County (Rocky Mount District), he purchased two parcels of land (80 and 160 acres respectively) and several slaves from William Sanders in 1838. He subsequently became one of the largest slave owners in the county, holding 104 people in 1850 and 128 in 1860. His plantations in Lowndes County were managed by a man named J.B. May. He also had slave holdings at Tuscaloosa (27) and a small contingent of household slaves (6) in Mobile.

Comments

The writer's interest in this family emanates from many years of research that led me to MARRAST. I believe Dr. Marrast purchased my great grandfather, Tom LESLIE and his mother, Harriett MORASS from a neighboring plantation owner, Thomas RIVES.
