Corporal Vincent J. Wargo, Jr.
United States Marine Corps

For service as set forth in the following Citation:

"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company L,Third Battalion,
Ninth Marines, Third Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic
of Vietnam. On 15 September 1968, the Third Platoon was advancing along a heavily wooded trail in
Quang Tri Province when an explosive device was suddenly command detonated and the Marines simultaneously
came under intense small arms and automatic weapons fire from an enemy ambush force, killing two Marines
and wounding two others. Observing a man pinned down behind a tree with one of the wounded, Corporal Wargo
completely disregarded his own safety as he fearlessly moved twenty-five meters along the fire-swept trail
to reach his two comrades. Undaunted by the heavy volume of hostile fire, he was assisting in the evacuation
of the injured Marine when he was critically wounded by a burst of enemy automatic weapons fire. Concerned
only for the safety of his own men, he ignored his painful injuries and maneuvered across the hazardous area
to a covered position in order to prevent any of his men from being wounded in an attempt to render
assistance. Shortly thereafter, Corporal Wargo succumbed to his injuries. His resolute determination and
heroic actions inspired his fellow Marines to advance and successfully accomplish their mission. By his
courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Corporal Wargo upheld the highest traditions of
the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his
country"
