Sly and the Family Stone was the first integrated, multi-gender rock band to take the 1960s by storm. Their style of rock combined soul, funk, and psychedelic music. This style, and the integrated nature of the band, forever changed the African American music industry. Suddenly, Sly and the Family Stone was not just an edgy rock band, but a political statement for racial equality. Sadly, drugs and internal problems caused the band to break up in 1975. For the rest of the century the band reunited on occasion and its members also pursued solo careers, but its impact on the 1960s stands as the most notable accomplishment of this legendary rock band.
