Jefferson Airplane was a psychedelic rock band that epitomized the San Francisco scene of the 1960s. Much like The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Big Brother and the Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane rose to fame in the clubs of the Bay Area, but they were the first of these bands to sign a major record-label contract and tour the U.S. and Europe. Also, much like their contemporaries, Jefferson Airplane used its fame to promote social change and opinions about the Vietnam War. The group evolved into the more commercial Jefferson Starship in 1974, gaining great fame but moving away from the sound and controversy of the 1960s that made the band famous.
