Textile plant gives workers raise - 1942

"Starting next payday, all employees of this company, from top to bottom, will receive an increase of 10 percent in pay."

That's the welcome notice that was posted Friday in the plant of the Clear Spring Worsted Mills, Inc. on North Main street [where the Belvedere at Doyle Square development is today].

The well-known plant, the largest single industry in Doylestown, employs about 100 people at the present time, and is not working to full capacity only because it is difficult to get sufficient material to keep the mill going at capacity. By November 1, it is expected the mill will be working at close to capacity, with as much as 8,000 yards of cloth turned out weekly.

At the present time, the mill is in the midst of turning out a government contract for approximately 225,000 yards of cloth, a considerable portion of which has already been delivered to the Quartermaster Depot in Philadelphia.

The company is making 18-ounce Olive Drab serge suiting and the regular 80-20 shirting for the United States Army. Some civilian cloth is also being turned out at the mill.
