Charles and Thomas Gray (brothers) marry Lelia & Mattie (sisters)

Mecklenburg and Danville, Virginia

Sarah Ann Tudor married Wyatt Floyd. Wyatt died in the Spotsylvania Courthouse battle, in Virginia and is buried in the Spotsylvania Virginia Confederate cemetery. Sarah & Wyatt had a daughter named Mattie Floyd who married Charles Gray. Sarah Tudor then married Charles Edenbeck and had a daughter named Lelia. Then Sarah died in 1881. Lelia went to live with Charles Gray and her sister Mattie Floyd. Lelia married Thomas Gray abt 1897. The Gray's were moving from Mecklenburg to Danville, Virginia during that time period, so not sure yet which place they were married at. I did not see a marriage record for them in the Danville records, but records weren't required to be kept in either locality in that time period. So sisters Mattie & Lelia married brothers Charles & Thomas Gray.

Son Marvin Meachum Gray

Danville, Virginia, United States

Gray, Marvin Meachum.jpg

On the Cemetery notes, it says Marvin died of knife wounds. I had a note from my gr. grandma that Marvin was killed. So I looked in the newspaper & found some articles about it in the Danville Bee newspaper. I imagine it was a very difficult time for the family. I did a check, and the guy who killed Marvin was out of prison just a year later, and within weeks killed someone else.

Picture of the 6 Men: notes

probably Jackson, Northampton, NC (Hotel Borgwyn)

See the picture of the 6 men under Thomas Gray's Footnote page picture.

Updated infomation posted 27 Feb 2011:

Thomas Gray is in the top middle. Charles (I believe) is either top left or bottom middle. I am guessing that Robert J. Lynch is bottom left, & George C. Taylor is bottom right. Or one of the man may also be Jimmy Kidd. Still trying to find more family to help me get a better ID. I believe this picture was taken at the wedding of my gr. grandfather Alginon Gray at Jackson, Northampton, NC on 5 May 1905. And the men are Alginon's brothers and brother-in-laws, We were originally told the man in the top right was George Stowe. For him to be in a Gray family picture, this would date the picture about 1910-1912, after George Stowe married Fannie Gray, (Alginon Gray's daughter). Alginon died in 1912, this is 6 men, so we originally thought maybe this was a ball bearer picture for Alginon's funeral. But in Sept 2010, some relatives told me the picture of Fannie Gray, age 11, was taken the same time as this picture, which was 1904, when Alginon got married. We got pictures of George Stowe about 1910-1912 and there is no way the man in the top right is George Stowe. So we now believe this to be Alginon's wedding picture, with Alginon being the man in the top right. I believe there is a strong family resemblance between the pictures I have of Hoyt Gray & Fannie Gray to the man in the Upper right, who I now believe to be Alginon Gray. Francis & Maude Gray look more like the Dortch side (Alginon's two wives. He married two sisters. Teresa Dortch first, then after being a widow for awhile, he married Martha Dortch, which I believe this picture was taken for. )

If you know of any of these families or have any picture of any of the Gray's in this generation, please email or contact me. -Thanks Julie Cabitto
