Believed to have been born in 1796 in New Jersey. One story has him fleeing to the Republic of Texas from Indiana after killing a man in a tavern fight. His son Daniel, born in Indiana, by a prior marriage, was also listed in Cherokee County, Texas in the 1860 Census.
