Stories

Dennis actually died as a result of enemy small arms fire as he was manning an M60 machinegun providing covering fire for the remainder of his patrol to escape from an ambush. The correct information is at: http://thewall-usa.com/info.asp?recid=58106

Thank you for adding that detail. The information we added to The Wall came from The National Archives and is the latest information they have. Clearly there are still some errors to be corrected.

Our squad was on a short recon patrol, just outside of the platoon's perimeter in the southern end of the Suai Ca Valley, when it was ambushed by an estimated platoon sized force of NVA. We lost our RTO and grenadier, wounded in the first grenade blasts and automatic weapon's fire. Then we lost our point man to other injuries. Two new guys to the platoon managed to escape the ambush kill zone. What I remember most about Dennis that day is that he provided covering fire from the kill zone for the rest of us during the firefight. He was in the open, with no cover. He was hit in the forehead by either an enemy bullet or a grenade fragment. He died fighting. Dennis was our friend we think of him each day.
