in the army

| Elberton, GA

Thomas was drafted in 1945.  As a farmer and father of two, Thomas did all he could to avoid having to join the army.  He had known a man who was able to avoid fighting because he was in a similar situation, but Thomas was unable to avoid enlisting.

Because of his late entry into the army, he was enlisted just shy of a year.  During that time he was a member of Cannon Co 7th Inf 3rd Div as a Truck Driver Light in Germany.  He was honorably discharged on 14 Jul 1946, two months after V-E day.

While Thomas was away one of his worst fears was recognized:  his crops were stolen.  He was never able to prove who had stolen his crops, but he had strong suspicions. Shortly after, he gave up farming and moved close to Atlanta for a steel mill job.
