38 days after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor Dewey enlisted in the US Army on 13 Jan 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Assigned to an Army Infantry unit in Belgium in Dec 1944 he is reported Missing In Action on 17 Dec 1944.

He was captured and held as a Prisoner Of War for 118 days until he was liberated by US forces in Germany on 13 Apr 1945.

Suffering from malnutrition and pneumonia he was transferred to a hospital in France where he died after 7 weeks from his illness on 24 Jun 1945.  He was buried in France for 1,011 days until he was returned to his family in Utah for re-burial on 30 Mar 1948.
