Leo French

The Wilmore News, April 21, 1944.

Mrs. Howard Edwards has received a message that her brother, Lt. Leo French, is missing in action on the Anzio beachhead in Italy. The Edwards were former Wilmore residents.

The Wilmore News, June 16, 1944.
LT. LEO FRENCH, PRATT, KILLED BY LAND MINE

Stepping on a German land mine on the Anzio beachhead caused the death of Lt. Leo French, of Pratt. The information came to the family from a staff sergeant who was near him when he was killed, and who is now in this country.

He said Lt. French, with a unit of engineers under his command, was engaged in stringing barbed wire entanglements when in the darkness he contacted the german mine. He previously had been wounded in a shoulder while picking up a soldier who had been hit.

Lt. French was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo French, formerly of Pratt, who now live at Dalhart. A sister, Mrs. H. E. Edwards, lives at Coats. -- The Hutchinson Herald.
