Memories of John

Cicero, Illinois

I remember John telling me, when I was a young boy, that while he was stationed in Nebraska or the Dakotas before going to Europe, he knew a man named Flip Corkin who was a pilot. According to John Flip was the man that the comic strip "Steve Canyon" was patterned after.

While working for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in West Chicago, Illinois, a fire broke out in a roundhouse and a couple engines were in the building at the time. John went into the fire and drove the engines out, saving the company many thousands of dollars.

I have many great memories of John. He always had a smile on his face and something good to say about almost everyone.
