Stories

My Father as I knew him

Mt. Juliet, Tennessee

Strong, Indenpendent, self reliant, responsible, helpful to others, strong work ethic and family man.

He was a S/Sgt. with the Third Infantry Division, 7th Inf. Reg, Company M.

My father never talked much about the war.  The only time would be when he was around others who were there.  He made the statement once "If they talk about it all the time chances was they wern't in the action much".

We would ask him to take us camping.......His statement to us was "If you had to camp the way I did you wouldn't want to camp anymore.

We would ask him to take us hunting.......Hist statement to us was "If you done the hunting I did you wouldn't want to hunt again.   I never saw my father with a gun in his hand but one time.  My uncles were target shooting at oil cans.  My father made the statement " Ya got to shoot from the hip".  Uncle gave him the gun and said " Lets see ya do it Jr.".  My father shot once and the can fell.  He gave the gun back to my uncle and said " Ya got to shoot from the hip".  Never saw him with a gun again.

We would hear my father screaming in his sleep at night........War has got to be Hell.

Thanks to all my fathers for the freedom I enjoy.  Charles Cole Jr. - WWII,  Charles Cole - Navy WWI,  William H. Cole - CSA, AA Surgen,  Elisha Cole - War of 1812,  Joseph Cole - Revolutionary War

My father use to say they were so poor as kids they would take wagon wheels and rope to make a YO-YO. They would stand in the barn loft to play with it. Now that's poor.
