Served in the 100th Division, 397th Regiment, Co. H. Was in the Battle of Bitche and then in Remling, France. Awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. His unit was awarded the Presidental Unit Citation for their actions at Remling.

Following the Battle of Remling he was shipped to England for treatment of severely frostbitten feet. He then joined a unit in Belgum and was later shipped to the Phillipines.
