The Story of the Yorkville High School World War II Banner

THE STORY OF THE YOKVILLE HIGH SCHOOL WWII BANNER

Alline Taylor who was the Home Economics teacher at Yorkville High School and her students created this banner to hang in the halls of the Yorkville High School so that all who were attending could keep in mind the young men from the school who were serving during World War II. She and her students created the flag during the 1942-1943 school year. (She began teaching in the Fall of 1938 and left to rear her children in 1944.)

The original flag was machine sewn. With each star appliquéd with the machine. The thirty seven stars nearest the YHS initials were had sewn on as more young men joined the military.

Gold stars covered three of the blue stars that had the names of R.F. Edmiston, Wilson Jones, and Wilson Ray Scott. When the flag was taken down, it was given to Gabe and Hortense Jones, parents of Wilson Jones. After their deaths, the flag was in the possession of Congressman Ed Jones, brother of Wilson. Bettye Loggins McCaffrey, secretary to Congressman Jones and sister of Reuben and Phillip Loggins whose stars are on the flag, became the keeper of the flag. The flag was returned to public display in the Yorkville City Hall. Today it hangs in the Yorkville Community Center.

The flag was framed with archival materials in 2014 and dedicated during a reunion of former Yorkville students on May 2, 2014.
