Barringer Cop of Year

Patrolman George P. Barringer Jr., of 166 Henry Street, has been selected as the Policeman of The Year, to be honored at a luncheon meeting of the Kingston Kiwanis Club on Thursday, November 16.

The announcement of the selection by a five-man committee of the Kingston Polie Department was made today by Police Commissioner Henry P. Eighmey, a member of the committee which included Police Chief Roberf F. Murphy, Deputy Chief Grover S. Hoffay, Patrolman James Scott, president of the Kingston Patrolmen's Association and Detective John Crispino.

In addition to being named Policeman of The Year, Barringer will receive the Gold Merit award from the department for his detection and apprehension of a known criminal who had broken into the Kingston Savings Bank on Wall Street last year.

Police Commissioner Eighmey said Barringer's name has been identified with several instances of exceptional police work during the past year and described Ptl. Barringer as "one of our most capable patrolmen, always willing to do his best when called upon to do so."

Other departmental awards will include the Silver Merit Award to Patrolman Raymond Wells and Curtis Vandemark, and Detective Leonard Ellsworth; certificates to Patrolmen Thomas Coffey, Ira Hadsel, Raymond Wells, Anthony Turck and Edwin Coughlin; 15-year service award to Det. John Crespino.

A Citizen's Citation was awarded to Gilbert Gray of the Doctor's Ambulance Service for his participation in the recovery of a car and youngster which had rolled off the dock into the Rondout Creek.

All off-duty members of the Kingston Police Department will be the guests in uniform of the Kingston Kiwanis club at the November 16 luncheon, with Mayor Raymond W. Garraghan scheduled to make the Policeman of The Year to Patrolman Barringer.
