War Service of Armbruster

27 Mar 1818 | Pennsylvania

On 27 March 1818, Matthias Armbruster (by his own account "an old soldier") submitted his declaration and other papers in order to receive a pension. He admits he meets the "needs" criteria by stating that he is poor and indigent, and gives a detailed description of his troop's movements during the time he was enlisted. So sad to see that our soldiers have always had to struggle to get their due from the government and country they served. Our Iraq and Afghanistan troops would have much to talk about with their Revolutionary brothers in arms.

These documents are great! But it is sad to find out what veterans had to go through to get money to survive. They had to be completely without any means of support then tell everyone about it. THEN hope their application was accepted as 'Valid'. And if you look there are quite a few that were not accepted.
