Lt Sterling D Ditchey, 310th Bomb Group, 380thBS, MTO B-25's WWII

Heroism, Extraordinary bravery and performance while in an Aerial Battle.

Lt Sterling Ditchey was living in Orange, Calif. and enlisted at Santa Ana AAF, Ca. on 10 Nov. 1942.  He was born in Calif in 1923 and entered directly into the AAC.  Sterling is White, Citizen, completed 4 years of high school and was a skilled lineman and  serviceman, telegraph, telephone and power.  He was single at Enlistment.

Lt. Sterling Ditchey was trained as an AAC B-25 Bombardier, was assigned to the 310th Bomb Group (Medium) and the 380th Bomb Squad.  He flew out of Corsica, France in the Mediterranean Theatre during WWII in the B-25 Mitchell Medium Bomber (May of 1944 to Feb.1945)

   70 Combat Missions as a Commissioned Bombardier, many Medals, Sterling's 70th Mission (25 Jan. 1945) was in the "Miss Mitchell" but his 'regular' Ship was the "Puss N Boots"

"MANY Medals" ... Lt Ditchey was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with NINE Oak Leaf Clusters, and earned three Battle Participation Awards "Rome-Arno", "Southern France" and "Air Offensive of Europe".   What was the Mediterranean Theatre (MTO) also covered much of the European Theatre of Operations (ETO) as well.

Sterling keeps busy with the 57th BW, meets friends (381st Bomb Squad) George Underwood and wife Bev (and others) for lunch nearly every month and has lots of family outings....  Fun things with "Kids" and Grandkids !

Michelle Cahill; Niece of 340thBG, 486thBS, Lt Thomas Cahill, Bombardier   Last night as I read through your e-mail and particularly the dates you mentioned in paragraph #2, I got a thrill of a life time!   Your Uncle Tommy and I weren't just leading parallel lives, we were actually flying together.   Attached are scans of 5 orders where we were listed.
  1. 23 December 1943--we were assigned to Squadrons at Columbia SC.
  2. 31 March 1944--as B-25 combat crews, we were shipped from Columbia to Savannah GA.
  3. 5 April 1944---as  B-25 combat crews, we were shipped from Savannah to W Palm Beach, FL.
  4. 8 April 1944--as B-25 combat crews, overseas orders took us via South America, Ascension Island, West Coast of Africa, Marrakech, Algiers finally to Telergma, Algeria,  We were "briefed" for the flight on April 8, 1944, and looking back at that date, I would bet that your Uncle Tommy and I (and our crews) attended that same briefing.  We were handed sealed orders, and ordered to only open them after we were airborne one hour.  We flew out of W Palm Beach FL on Easter morning on April 9th, ".....out into the wild blue yonder."
  5. 3 May 1944--I guess that these orders "confirmed" something--probably that we actually arrived at Telergma.
  6. 10 May 1944--we were eventually assigned to the 310th BG a Ghisonaccia, and probably there are orders "out there somewhere" which assigned Uncle Tommy to the 340th BG
  After all of us got airborne on April 9th, apparently each crew flew individually, I don't remember hooking up together any where on the route.  In our case, we encountered engine trouble in Natal, Brazil, and we were delayed for 10 days there waiting for spare parts from the States.  We also delayed by weather in Algiers, waiting for the last leg of the trip, Telergma, Algeria.   I would be interested if Uncle Tommy wrote anything about the leg of  his trip from Dakar, French West Africa.  When we arrived there on April 24th, there were rumors that some of the B25's who has proceeded us had had trouble--and on the 24th, the day we made the trip north across the Sahara, we spotted one fire which we assumed was an aircraft down.  I mentioned about that event in my attachment, dated April 24th.   Sterling
