Richard Louis Bergh was born in Watertown, South Dakota on October 14, 1921 to Ingvald G. and Mildred Bergh. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1940. He worked from September 1941 to September, 1942 for Lockheed Aircraft Company in Burbank, California.

Richard enlisted in the Army on September 14, 1942 at Fort Mac Arthur, California. He left the United States for foreign serve on November 9, 1944. He served as a photographer on a B-29 superfortress with the 3rd Photographic Squadron, 311th Reconnaissance Wing. He left the United States for Foreign Service on November 9, 1944 and was reported missing in action on February 14, 1945. His death was presumed to have occurred on February 15, 1946, when the aircraft he was a crewmember on failed to return from a photoreconnaissance mission over Japan.

He is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii. He received the Air Medal and Purple Heart.
