Captain Charles H. Mauvais, USAAC

Berlin, Germany

The Frank Malooly Crew

During World War II Charles Mauvais was the navigator for the Francis J. "Frank" Malooly crew of the 100th Bomb Group "The Bloody Hundredth," 350th Bomb Squadron, US Army Air Corp. They flew 26 missions and are credited with 8 Berlin bombings (some claim 9). On May 24, 1944, a huge air battle took place in the skies above Berlin. The 8th Air force took on the Reich's defenses in a fierce contention. Luftwaffe lost 29 single engine fighters and US bomber command lost 34 heavy bombers. Flying the 42-31534 ("Powerhouse") - Boeing B-17G-20-BO Fortress - (LN-N), Malooly's crew was one of nine shot down from the 100th BG that day. All 10 crewmen survived the crash and were held as Prisoners of War, mostly at Stalag Luft III, for the remainder of the war. Charles was a Captain at the time of his discharge. He was awarded a Purple Heart and the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters.
