Berkeleyan Is Yet of 75 Flights Most pilots now smashing tar gets in Germany hope the end of the European war will mean chance for them to go home. But to Second Lt. Manuel K. Soo, 24, 2l24 7th 'It, ChlRese-AmerTeah pilot hi a P-47 Thunderbolt group, it will mean "the chance I've been waiting for to destroy Japanese aggression." Lt. Soo, who has flown more than 75 combat missions, 1 regarded by his fellow pilots as a cool, skillful flier, according to a release from the Ninth Air Force Fighter Bomber Base Headquarters in France. He has shot down one ME 109, holds half credit for another, and has destroyed a JU 88 on the ground. While Lt? Soo was flying over anemy lines, the release stated, a flak burst shot out his oil system. His plane's engine went dead and Soo was forced to make an emergency landing-but, fortunately, on a strip in friendly territory. The officer was born in America as was his father. His mother is a native of Canton, China. "When I applied for aviation cadet training," Lt. Soo related, "it was my hope that it would be the quickest way to get into the fight on the side of the Chinese. But I was sent to the European Theater. When the war in Europe is over first I'd like to see my family. But after that, I've got but one desire-to head for Japanese skies." Lt.
