Hugh and Ruth Wymer Melrose had two children, Wendell H. and Patricia L. born in Sept 1943 at Ashland, Kansas. They are twins. Ruth raised her children at Protection, Kansas and Dodge City, Kansas. Ruth never remarried. She was always a widow.

Hugh enlisted in the US Army at Ft. Logan, Colorado in March 1942. He was sent to Camp Barkeley, Texas for basic training and assignment to the 90th Division's 357th Infantry Regitment, Co. G. He was in the Louisana manuvers and in the Desert training at Camp Granite, California in the fall of 1943. The Division was shipped out from Ft. Dix, N.J. in March of 1944 to England. They landed in Normandy, France on D +2, 8 June 1944. Hugh was KIA on 12 June 1944 near Gourblesville in Normandy. His body was returned to the USA in late fall of 1948 and reburied in Hill Top cemetery at Pagosa Springs, Colorado.
