Paul Smith served as an Aircraft Mechanic with the 64th Fighter Squadron "Black Scorpions," 57th Fighter Group. He served with the unit from its formation at Mitchel Field, NY on 15 January 1941. The Group began its overseas deployment in North Africa at Muqueibile, Palestine in August 1942; it bounced around North Africa through Egypt, Libya and Tunisia. In the summer of 1943 Paul contacted a serious case of Hepatitis, and was evacuated to the U.S. via a Navy hospital ship; for the rest of his life, he refused suggestion of taking a pleasure cruise...
