"Almost Home" Roy H. Mitchell

Technician 4th Grade Roy H. Mitchell is buried in Plot D Row 6 Grave 58 of the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Belgium.  He enlisted in the US Army on Thanksgiving Day, November 21, 1940 from Houston, Texas and trained at Fort Sam Houston.  I only have his date of birth as 1917 so he would have been about 23 years old. He served in the 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division.  After training in Northern Ireland and Wales from October 1943 to June 1944 the 2nd Infantry Division crossed the channel to land on Omaha Beach on D-Day plus 1, June 7th, 1944 and he was killed in action three days after Christmas, December 28th, 1944 at Elsenborn Ridge, Belgium.  The 2nd Division suffered 3,031 killed in action and 12,785 wounded in action during World War II.

I could not find his family on the 1920 or 1930 Shelby County Census but the military page on the Shelby County Historical website shows he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Mitchell of Joaquin and the husband of Elladee Smith and that he attended Patroon High School.  There is an Andrew Lee Mitchell born in 1883 and died in 1960 buried in the Johnson Fellowship Cemetery that could be his father.  I could not find a marriage record of Mr. Mitchell and Elladee.  He may have had an infant sister, Beatrice who died 11 days after birth on October 13th, 1935.
