Richard enlisted at Ft. Riley, Kansas and reported to the European Theatre of Operations on April 13, 1946. After receiving a near-fatal head injury, he left Europe on May 30, 1949, arriving in the US on June 9, 1949. He was discharged from the Army at Camp Kilmer (now Ft. Dix), New Jersey. He received disability for his injury for the rest of his life. Service number: RA 17137861.

Richard was trained as a mechanic and worked at such places as Ford Motors until he enlisted in the Army on October 24, 1945. He was sent from Ft. Riley, Kansas to Stuttgart, Germany (European Theatre of Operations, 114th Con Band), on April 22, 1946, where he served as a corporal in the cavalry (the last to use horses) and played in the Army band as a Bandsman Snare Drum. He was injured with a head wound which required surgery, and eventually led to his discharge on May 30, 1949. (He was on guard duty and was knocked down stairs by a German POW. He was unconscious for days.) He arrived back in Michigan on June 9, and was discharged from the army on June 17 at Camp Kilmer (now Ft. Dix), New Jersey. He received disability checks for this injury for the rest of his life. While serving, Richard earned the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal. Richard died in Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville from an infection which occurred after gall bladder surgery.
