321st Bomb Group Personell; Donald V Urquhart; 309thBG Combat Training, USA 28 August 1942
Training Acct. in South Carolina 28 August, 1942, Lt arrived dead on arrival. Donald was 27 years, 7 months and 21 days old.
Donald was a friend and was training with Lt Jim Bugbee who sent us this picture, Capt. Bugbee remembered his friend. Donald was one of the Original Cadre' in the 447th Bomb Squadron of the 321st Bomb Group, he was however, training in a B-24 that day. While there are tragedies in ALL wars, these are so difficult as our boys learned the mechanics of war from a stand-point of "every concept was NEW" to them. God Bless our brave men. 447th Bombardment Squadron Special Account: August 28, 1942: This date we had our first and only casualties of the training period. Going along as co-pilots with a 309th Bombardment Group plane and pilot, Lts. Urquhart and Vangsness were killed instantly when their plane crashed one quarter mile from the runway at 5:30 in the morning. Fog had a great deal to do with the accident.
