1943 — Germany
Arnold Martin enlisted in the USAAC on August 16, 1940. He became an aviation cadet and was commissioned 2nd Lt. May 19, 1943. Sent to Great Ashfield, England in August 1943. Assigned to the 385th Bomb Group, 548th Squadron. Co-piloted on raid over Bremen, Germany October 8, 1943. Co-piloted the next day in B-17 "Miss Nonalee" on famous raid over Marianburg factory in Germany, October 9, 1943. Aircraft developed engine trouble and had to turn back. Pilot ordered the crew to bail over Denmark and all were captured. MACR 824. Pilot landed the B-17 and escaped. Martin spent 15 months in Stalag Luft III. Forced to march from Stalag Luft III to Stalag VII A in January 1945. Liberated April 29, 1943. Discharged from USAAC December 1946. Joined USAFR and flew until 1950.
