Dewey Eugene Owens served in North Africa with the 78th artillery, 2nd armored division. They went over on the USS John Penn(later sunk in the Pacific). His unit was sent in response to Rommel's destruction of the 1st armored division. They were in cork forests near Tunis. While there, he met African soldiers called "Single Es" by the GIs. They were paid by how many German ears they collected. Dewey remembered how sharp their knives were; they were not men to mess with. During this time his appendix flared up and he was operated on in a 4x4 truck which was used as an operating room. -As told to his daughter
