This signature is certainly by this person (my father). The signed currency is known as a "Short Snorter". A search will tell you lots about this tradition. My father was at Saipan and Guam from Nov, 1944 to Oct 1945, so it is likely that their paths crossed in that area. Thanks for posting this connection to his service.

Not sure if this signature belongs to this gallery, but the timeline matches up. My Grandfather (Navy Lt.H.C.Hesse during WWII-ret'd Capt.1956) was a fleet navigator for the Philippine maneuvers. The Wassatch transported many units throughout the war and during the reconstruction period immediately after. Not sure why these guys signed the currency or why the date is significant. Any clues?

A lot of the data from the enlistment record is wrong. He was born in 1919 and was single when he enlisted in 1939.
