Prisoner of War

Mukden, Shenyang, China

Captured by the Japanese after the fall of Corregidor in the Philippines 7 May 1942, during World War II.  After surviving the Bataan Death March he then suffered through a voyage aboard the Japanese "Hell Ship" Totorri Maru to Pusan, Korea, from where he was taken to the Mukden Prisoner of War Camp, near present day Shenyang, China.  George died in Mukden from pellagra and a collapsed lung on 30 November 1942.

George was a first generation Greek-American.  His parents, both born in Greece, were Peter and Paniota Karavos.  Peter earned a living as a truck driver for a produce company in Redding, Shasta, California, as per the 1920 Census.
