Prisoner of War

Wilford "Uncle Gail" had a long military career. He served in the CCC 1936-1937 which planted trees in western Oklahoma and built National Parks in Colorado.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1937-1967 when he retired. He served mostly as an enlisted man and rose to the rank of Sergeant Major. During World War II, he received a battlefield commission to First Lieutenant. He retired while stationed at the West Point Military Academy, New York and is buried in the Post Cemetery there. After retiring he lived in Highland Falls, New York.

During World War II he landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day (6 Jun 1944), was wounded slightly but stayed in action, fought across Europe, was captured by the Nazis during the Battle of the Bulge (Dec 1944) and was a POW until Jun 1945. Medals were Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

During his Army career he and the family were stationed at many places to include Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Wisconsin, Colorado, Panama Canal Zone and West Point Military Academy.
