The Origins of Robert & Bettie

Cliftonville (Noxubee) MS

Robert Lewis Gavin was born in 1838 into a family that migrated from Spartanburg SC. His family were all farmers and they owned many slaves prior to the Civil War. Robert was a Confederate soldier.

His "consort" was Bettie WARFE, whom we believe was brought to MS from VA as a 9 year old slave. Our family story says she was traded to one of the Gavin's for a horse. She and Robert had 17 children together without the benefit of marriage, which was illegal at the time for people of different races.
