19 May 1916 | Washington, DC
"This is to certify that James A. Barber was enrolled on the eleventh day of November 1861 to serve three years and reenlisted as a Veteran Volunteer, December 29, 1863 to serve three years was discharged on the twenty-fourth day of June, 1865 by reason of muster out of battery while holding the grade of Corporal in Battery G, First Regiment of Rhode Island Light Artillery Volunteers. That a medal of honor was awarded to him on the sixteenth day of June, 1866 for gallant and meritorious conduct in action at Petersburg, VA, April 2, 1865, he being one ofa number of picked artilleyrmen who voluntarily accompanied an infantry assaulting party, and turned upon the enemy the guns captured in the assault, that his name was entered and recorded on the Army and Navy Medal of Honor Roll on the seventh day of May, 1916 as authorized of the Act of Congress approved April 27, 1916, and is entitled to receive the special pension granted by that Act. Given at the War Department, Washington, DC, this nineteenth day of May, 1916."
